Monk House is believed to be one of the oldest houses in Petworth and is one of Petworth's secrets. The charming period Grade II listed townhouse is attached on one side and is believed to have origins dating back to 1428. The enchanting house has an appealing front elevation which is rendered and painted, with the accommodation being arranged over 4 floors, some of which enjoys lovely views over the long private garden and to The Shimmings Valley beyond. From the moment you enter the property there is an abundance of character throughout, with thick stone walls, extensive exposed beams, exposed walls, some wooden floors, wooden doors, wood panelling and oak framed leaded light windows.

From North Street, steps lead up to the ground floor with a front door opening into the very pleasant sitting room, with exposed beams and exposed brick chimney breast which features an open fire created from an original kitchen range. Steps lead down to the kitchen/breakfast room, which includes a range of fitted cupboards under a wooden worktop and incorporating a ceramic sink with drainer and also a gas fired Rayburn. A window and door from the kitchen open into the garden with lovely long views over the garden. From the kitchen, steps lead down to the very cosy dining room with extensive exposed beams. From the corner of the kitchen steps lead up to the cloakroom/shower room with wood panelled walls. Further stairs from the kitchen rise up to the first floor, with a good size main bedroom, at the rear of the house and enjoying lovely views over the garden and to The Shimmings Valley beyond. From the first floor landing doors also open into bedroom 2, with some wood panelling, and also to the family bathroom, which has exposed beams and a porthole window. From the landing the staircase rises to the second floor, with 2 bedrooms in the eaves and a cloakroom.

The garden is one of the most important features of this delightful property and it is believed to be one of the longest private gardens in Petworth, measuring over 170 feet. There is a separate side access and also a door from the kitchen which opens onto the large stone terrace, with a raised bed to one side. The stunning garden offers privacy and seclusion and includes a long lawn which stretches to the end of the garden, bordered by attractive stone walls and mature hedging. There are extensive beds with a wide variety of flowering shrubs,, plants and fruit trees. There is a paved terrace at the far end with, to one side, a studio/home office and a greenhouse to the other side. The garden also provides stunning far reaching rural views over The Shimmings Valley, the Weald and to the North Downs.

Monk House is located in the heart of the historic old market town of Petworth, right opposite the wall of Petworth House and opposite The Cow Yard, which gives direct public access, on foot, into Petworth Park. The property is located in a part of the town which has changed very little over the years, being situated on part of the street which is made up of only period properties. The house is within easy walking distance of the shops. Petworth is dominated by Petworth House with its beautiful 750 acres of parkland designed by Capability Brown and the town has an excellent range of independent local shops and businesses, catering for everyday needs. Midhurst is located about 6 miles to the west and Pulborough, with its mainline train station, about 5 miles to the east. The City of Chichester (14 miles) provides a broader choice, all the major supermarkets and its well renowned Festival Theatre. In addition, there is a horseracing, golf and lots for the motor enthusiast at the famous Goodwood Estate (11 miles). The area provides a good choice of state and independent schools. Gatwick, London Bridge and Victoria (70 mins), alternatively Haslemere Station (11 miles) has a fast service to Waterloo (57 mins).

Mains electricity, gas, water and drainage are connected. Central heating and hot water is via the Rayburn gas fired range with radiators.
