Employment Contracts

Fri 7 February 2020

From 6 April 2020, employment contracts or statements of written particulars must be issued to all new employees and workers from their first day of employment. This includes full-time, part-time and temporary staff.

Currently, employees who have been employed for more than one month expect a written employment contract within two months of the employment commencing.

Having an employment contract provides many benefits for both the employer and the employee, including:

•            Reduces the risk of future claims by employees.

•            Sets the standards of what is required in the job role.

•            Allows the employer and employee to negotiate terms and conditions to ensure all parties are happy.

•            Shows employees that they are appreciated and cared for.

Employers may be fined between 2 and 4 weeks pay, per employee, for failing to have written agreements with staff.

Other new legislation includes changes to agency workers rules, calculations of holiday pay, and a parental bereavement law.

As land agents practising rural estate management, we are able to create fully tailored employment contracts and job descriptions. We can also advise you on the best policies for you and your employees.
