Biomass heating beats subsidy reduction

The 130kW ETA Hack boiler is an advanced model with good controls, but most importantly the layout and design undertaken by RH & RW Clutton takes advantage of the land form to allow the wood chip fuel to be loaded by tipping trailer from local estate supplies.

The tenants of the properties fed by the heat have agreed to pay per kWh consumed on the basis of a charge calculated by reference to the avoided oil cost but with a 15% discount.

The scheme benefits from the Renewable Heat Incentive, and includes a back up oil boiler, thus displacing the servicing costs of the five boilers that currently feed the properties.

Some 200m of heating pipe is laid to feed the customers, who are all individually metered with web enabled remote sensing, minimising administration costs.

Each property is served by a heat exchanger, which replaces the oil boiler - doing away with smells and the need to pay upfront for oil deliveries.

The client will make a heathly return on the capital cost, at the same time as providing a profitable market for the lower grade timber grown on the estate.

Even with reduced Heat Incentive payments and a lower oil price, a well designed scheme is well worth considering
